A new day, a new Government

Local Councillor Allan Siao Ming Witherick has welcomed the new government and in particular the Deputy Prime Minister.
Locally we recognise that the Tories won the parliamentary seat, with the Liberal Democrats a close second and we will continue to fight for our manifesto and the principles that we believe in at all levels.
But nationally the Conservatives didn’t win, Labour didn’t win, the Liberal Democrats didn’t win.

When the country needed stable governance our party has stepped up to the plate in the same way that St Albans at one point had a hung council with cabinet members from all three parties.

If you voted Liberal Democrat you will now see us working to make Liberal Democrat policies a reality which must be a good thing. our presence will also temper the actions of the Conservatives who join us in Government.
We are not an annexe to the Conservative party and neither were we ever an extension of the Labour party.

One of our arguments for Proportional Representation is that the parliament would better reflect the views of the people. Unfortunately, despite an increase in the vote share to 23% nationally the Liberal Democrats secured just 8.8% of the seats. So whilst a Labour-Liberal Democrat grouping represent a majority of the wishes of voters at 52%, it would have had just 49% of the seats in parliament, making any such coalition highly unstable and simply non-viable.

In terms of our work locally it means we will continue to campaign for the residents of Marshalswick South, St Albans and Hertfordshire and the UK in that order regardless of who it is we are talking to.
