Beech Bottom litter pick 19 March

by awitherick on 17 March, 2011

Although the St Albans council supported litter pick finishes on the 27 March, we know that many people work and so weekends are the best time to get active!

Help us clear up rubbish from the beauty spots across St Albans City and District, including Beech Bottom in St Albans, by taking part in Litter Pick Week from 19 – 27 March.

St Albans City and District Council is inviting residents, schools and local groups to organise litter picks during Litter Pick Week to help improve the appearance of the District’s beauty spots and open spaces.

Residents can also join in our litter pick at Beech Bottom on Saturday, 19 March from 10am to 12 noon. Organised by the local Liberal Democrats, volunteers are asked to meet at the Valley Road end.

Local councillor Allan Witherick said “We’ve pulled out everything from bikes and beds through to tyres and tins. Litter pickers, bags and gloves will be provided.  Please come along at 10am you can stay for however long you want. Children are welcome to join in the fun, but they must be supervised.”

Details of this and any other litter pick events seeking volunteers are posted on the Council’s website at: http://www.stalbans.gov.uk/environment-and-planning/rubbish-waste-and-recycling/

Anyone interested in organising their own litter pick, can request an information pack from the Council by emailing [email protected] or telephoning 01727 819285.

The Council will arrange for any litter that is collected to be picked up by its waste management contractor, Enterprise, from an agreed location. It will also provide participants with gloves, litter pickers and bags to use.

Marshalswick South Councillor Melvyn Teare, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability for St Albans City and District Council, said: “Please join in this great initiative to help get rid of plastic bags, tin cans and old newspapers from our streets and open spaces. You can either organise your own event or attend one listed on the Council’s website.”

Litter Pick Week is part of the Council’s Cleaner District Campaign and is designed to help improve the appearance of our streets and the general environment in the District, one of the Council’s priorities.

The Council will also help groups who want to do voluntary litter picks at other times of the year. Simply call the Council on the number above.
