There are many countries where we don’t have representation, or where the nearest embassy or consulate isn’t British.

One of the benefits of being European is that you can seek help from one of the other European countries if present.  It’s an area where work is still being undertaken so that consular staff are more aware of this, but the benefits are clear.

With man made problems and natural disasters it’s an extra safety net you should know about.
