A few years ago the NHS in Hertfordshire was running up debts, in part because of how the national formulas tell us that we’re a “Healthy” place to live.
2006/07 saw Hertfordshire carry forward a loss of nearly £89m.
Cut backs and efficiencies saw an in year “saving” of nearly £34m meaning that there was just £50m deficiet to carry forward to 2007/08.
2007/08 the NHS in Hertfordshire again managed to save £50m so that from 2008/09 there was a positive bank balance. It didn’t last long.
On Wednesday councillors heard that, just like the boom and bust economy under Labour, the NHS locally looks to be heading to bust again with a predicted overspend of £24m by the end of this year.
The result was that, on the day and with no prior warning, Councillors were given a presentation on the proposed £28 Million pounds worth of cuts proposed in the NHS.
We will be watching closely to see what this will really mean for Marshalswick South, and of course St Albans City Hospital.
