Snow Daze…

by awitherick on 18 December, 2009

With the Kids  enjoying the snow what’s the situation?

Schools
Most of the schools in St Albans are currently closed. You can check on this website for a list.  Do check local radio etc as well.
The school bus services will do their best, but buses aren’t the easiest things to drive in these conditions and so where they do run may have to stop where it is safe, rather than at their usual stops.  For more information, please contact the company which run your school bus, details can be found at www.intalink.org.uk.

Roads
You can find out more about which have been done at www.hertsdirect.org/salting and for national roads, go to http://www.highways.gov.uk.

For practical advice for these conditions please see Herts advice to drivers or driving tips pages as well as at www.herts.police.uk/.

Salting footpaths
St Albans District Council has asked Herts. Highways to release salt for this.

Refuse and Recycling collections Canceled.
These have been halted- whilst people might be able to get to work it is far more dangerous to try moving a large collection vehicle around on icy roads, especially as most residential roads will not have been cleared.  They may collect on 19/12 if weather allows.  Update will appear on www.stalbans.gov.uk

Herts. Community Meals
Some drivers have had difficulty getting in but St Albans District Council will be doing its best to assist this vital service.

St Albans Civic Centre reception and Contact Centre
The offices are open and staff coming in and telephones are being answered.

And for other issues:

  • Railfreight public inquiry: Inspector and both parties’ baristers are in and it is expected that it will run and conclude today.
  • Leisure Facilities: Are likely at best to be operating a restricted service today

Have a look at the St Albans page with links to HCC pages:  http://www.stalbans.gov.uk/advice-and-benefits/emergencies/snow_update.aspx
