Salt and shake

by awitherick on 11 January, 2010

The last few weeks have certainly been a case of needing good grit/salt- and still shaking from the cold!

Tory run Herts County Council have once again run out of salt with them slowly reducing the amount they are doing- so now they aren’t filling salt bins and are limiting what they give to Districts for town centres etc.

This is now a huge concern for local councillors as major routes in Marshalswick South such as Marshalswick Lane are now not being gritted (and it’s a steep slope!) while the whole of the Marshalswick area will now be left untouched.

Cllr Allan Witherick, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Marshalswick South said:

“I am doing what I can to get at least Marshalswick South and Beech Road to be ploughed when we get substantial snow fall, and if possible gritted.  The Tories just don’t seem to realise how vital this is!”

Under -6C the concern is that salt becomes almost ineffective.  This is because all salt does is lower the temperature at which water freezes.  The grit aspect does help it to dig in and of course one of the other important things when the snow does fall is that the plough helps to move it off of the road so it isn’t packed down.
