Tories refuse to Salt direct route to hospital

by awitherick on 14 January, 2010

Despite protests by the Tories that they’re salting routes will maintain links to essential services local residents face a circular battle to get to St Albans City Hospital.

The main route, Normandy Road, is left off of salting routes resulting in residents being forced to go via Batchwood Drive if coming from St Albans Centre.  The Tories proud press release states:

The Tory Executive Member for Highways and Transport, said: "The restricted network that we implemented on Monday morning means that we have already complied with this new expectation from government. We will continue to keep salting  A and B roads, plus roads that provide access to essential emergency services like hospitals and key fire stations."

For residents in Marshalswick it’s even worse as Beech Road is not being salted either- thus the journey is even worse as you have to go via the town centre, then out towards Batchwood Roundabout!

Cllr Allan Witherick said “We understand the Tories have to reduce the areas being gritted because they failed to get in sufficient salt/grit stock in advance. But they aren’t even trying to keep the roads clear in any sensible way!”
