Anyone can be vulnerable…

by awitherick on 24 September, 2010

Not all the things we deal with as councillors are positive.
Sometimes we deal with real life issues of people who are in need, or have suffered all kinds of problems.
One of the more sensitive issues is vulnerable adults, something the press often don’t pick up on. It might be someone who is elderly, frail, or has a learning or physical disability. They could suffer from mental illness, be a substance misuser, or homeless. They could be in an abusive relationship.
That abuse could be physical, psychological, financial, discriminatory, institutional or a case of neglect.
“If you have concerns about an individual, tell us. Your concerns will be treated confidentially. The issues could be caused by careers, be they council staff, family or neighbours, or even complete strangers.
It doesn’t matter. What does matter is peoples welfare and so tell us and we will do what we can to make sure that nothing untoward is going on.”
Local councillor Allan Witherick is also the Liberal Democrat county spokesman on Adult Care Services.

To report any type of abuse call Hertfordshire County Council’s Adult Care Services at any time on 0300 123 4042. For more information, including Hertfordshire County Councils policy, visit www.hertsdirect.org/caresupport/safe
