Why EU should care about driving up standards

by awitherick on 16 January, 2011

We’ve all seen the price at the pump going up, but did you realise how much more efficient cars have become?
New cars being sold in Britain offer more miles to the gallon than ever before, and the improvements are set to continue.

Official figures reveal that an EU law approved in 2008 has led to a 10% average improvement in the fuel efficiency of new vehicles over the past two years. This has helped our pockets, but also the environment by reducing CO2 emissions.

Some car makers are on course to meet a 2015 target for improving fuel efficiency as early as next year, despite claiming when the law was proposed that it would be too difficult to put into practice!

This is something that would not have happened if the EU hadn’t pushed car companies to do it, and something we know the UK could not have done on it’s own.

Something EU positive to think about while you’re making that essential journey by car.
