A WEEE Problem

by awitherick on 21 February, 2011

Marshalswick South and St Albans are good at recycling, with our rates among the best in the county.  But the issue of what happens with the various items which go for recycling is something that we do keep an eye on.

MEPs have recently voted on new rules for the promotion and increased recycling of electrical and electronic waste (WEEE).

Currently only one third of WEEE waste makes it to professional recycling centres, resulting in precious and sometimes rare materials from everyday household electrical items being dumped in landfill sites.  In our case locally you can take items to the tidy tip, or visit http://recyclingforapremier.com/ for more details.

As well as voting to promote WEEE recycling, the Liberal Democrat MEPs also campaigned to ensure safeguards were also put in place that prevent young children working in hazardous conditions and stop the illegal practice of criminals taking WEEE waste abroad to have it dismantled, often by young children working in unsafe conditions and then sold on in order to avoid strict EU recycling laws on dangerous chemicals and materials.

Small things like this can make a big difference to the environment.
