When a fire alarm goes off, what’s the first thing you do?

by awitherick on 27 May, 2011

For most people reading this title the first instinct is to think of how you’d react to hearing the alarm go off.  But what if you couldn’t hear?

Councillor Allan Witherick said “A fire alarm is important in any home, but even more so when you might not be able to detect some of the tell tale signs.  If you live with someone who is deaf, or know somebody who is, why not make sure that they are that little bit safer.”

British Standard BS5446-3:2005, which specifies smoke alarm kits for deaf and hard of hearing people. Products made to this standard give deaf people assurance of quality smoke alarms designed to meet their needs.

Anyone can ask for a Home Fire Safety Check which offers people the opportunity to get invaluable advice from their local fire and rescue service about planning escape routes, positioning alarms and ensuring that the correct, working smoke alarm is fitted in your home.
